Sexual Assault
Incidence of Sexual Assault
National estimates are that 1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men have been victims of rape or attempted rape. Children and young adult women are most at risk as 44% of sexual assault victims are under the age of 18, and 80% are under the age of 40. More than 80% of victims know their assailant. Less than 40% of sexual assault victims report the attack to law enforcement agencies.

Given the incidence of sexual assault in the U.S., every county or consortium of counties needs to have trained sexual assault examiners. California state law requires counties with populations of 100,000 or more to have trained examiners either on call or on duty. And, counties with populations over one million are required to have one team per million population.

Sexual Assault Forensic Medical Examination Teams
Examiner teams are commonly called SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Exam) Team or SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Teams. SAFE Team membership includes nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians. SANE Teams are nurse examiner teams.

Vision
Our plan for the sexual assault program is to continue to build a scientific evidence based curriculum with a range of courses; to provide leadership and training in the development and sustainability of SAFE/SANE teams; to establish the value and need for SAFE Teams in every California county or consortium of counties; to develop a telemedicine network for mentoring and coaching examiners; and to continue to develop new and enhance existing SART (Sexual Assault Response Teams). CCFMTC also welcomes inquiries from other states and countries.
